Myrthe Schoot has decided to put an end to her volleyball career. The 34-year-old libero played 387 international matches in Orange and won European Championship silver three times with the Dutch team (2009, 2015 and 2017).

Schoot played her last international match last year at the World Cup in her own country. After the elimination of the Netherlands, she decided to focus on completing her studies. She didn’t have a club and decided to gain experience in office life at the sports umbrella organization NOC*NSF.

So now she has decided not to return to the volleyball court. Schoot: “The energy and sacrifices you have to make to be able to practice top sport have become heavier recently.”

“Top sport is selfish and one-dimensional. I noticed that my goal was becoming less and less clear. New things came my way and I made huge leaps in my (social) development. It also feels great to have more time after all those years away from home. to spend at home with my family and friends.”

Career

Schoot came out in our country for Longa, Weert and Martinus. With the latter club she became champion twice and also won the cup twice. She played in Germany for ten years and celebrated three championships with Dresden and also won the cup twice.

She looks back on a career with “lots of great moments”. “Like at the 2018 World Cup in which we defeated top teams. The full stands when we played in the Netherlands. But above all, my teammates have made my career special. The unconditional friendship we shared, the deep valleys and the extreme peaks, have shaped me and inspired.”
