Uncertainty Over Transfers Leaves Dortmund Fans on Edge: Who Will BVB Sign?

While everyone at FC Bayern is looking forward to a commitment from storm superstar Harry Kane (29 / Tottenham), many fans in Dortmund are asking themselves: Was that it for us?

Critical voices are increasingly being raised around the runners-up: why was Felix Nmecha (22) from Wolfsburg paid a fee of 30 million euros? And why didn’t Edson Álvarez (25) come from Amsterdam?

And above all: who will Dortmund take anyway?

So far, there are only two new professionals with Ramy Bensebaini (28/free transfer from Gladbach) and Nmecha. Two certainly good Bundesliga players who still have to prove themselves at the top level.

BVB is currently reacting sourly to criticism of the hitherto rather thin transfer policy. You should just wait, they say. The mood is tense after the miserably lost championship after the last game of the season against Mainz (2:2).

Everyone in Dortmund knows: BVB is facing a fateful year: more Bayern hunters – or is there a risk of falling back onto the cheap places?

There is internal disagreement on the transfer policy. Desired clearer Edson Álvarez from Ajax Amsterdam had already looked for and found a house in Dortmund according to BamS information. Sports director Sebastian Kehl’s (43) dream player had decided to switch to BVB and is said to have turned down even better offers from England.

But above all coach Edin Terzic (40) suddenly lowered his thumb. The transfer fell through – to the frustration of Álvarez, who had negotiated his future in Dortmund with Kehl in Amsterdam.

After the departure of Jude Bellingham (20/for up to 133.9 million euros to Real Madrid), Dortmund still wants to sign another midfield star. But Álvarez was left out (for the time being).

Coach Terzic, who after his station and experience as technical director wants to have a say in transfers, relies primarily on physical strength when planning his tactics. Nmecha (1.90 meters) was his preferred candidate. Kehl, on the other hand, wants to focus more on the football component. This makes decision-making processes lengthy and complicated.

“It’s important to me that we make good transfers, not quick ones,” says Terzic. Kehl also asks for time in public and says: “Basically we are well positioned, both in terms of width and number of players.” The environment is still nervous.

In contrast to BVB, record champions Bayern are upgrading after the weak season (six points fewer than in 2021/22). Min-jae Kim (26), defender of Italian champions Napoli last season, is already there. Champions League winner Kyle Walker (33/Man City) is in conversation like Harry Kane. Leipzig’s Konrad Laimer (26) and Dortmund’s best assist provider Raphaël Guerreiro (29) came on a free transfer.

The announced super reinforcements are registered with concern in Dortmund’s boss floor. Bad memories come up: When Dortmund last annoyed Bayern with the championships in 2011 and the double in 2012 under Jürgen Klopp (56), the Munich team started a bowl dominance of eleven titles in a row.

The championship final in 2023 – the bosses are sure of that – was the greatest opportunity of the coming years.

In eight days, the BVB entourage will take off for the USA – a PR trip for sponsors on the American market. The labour-intensive training camp in Bad Ragaz (Switzerland) is no longer necessary. A challenge for Terzic, who, despite a trip through several time zones (San Diego, Las Vegas and Chicago) and jetlag, has to form a championship team after the return flight. There are friendlies against San Diego Loyal FC (July 28), Man United (July 31/Las Vegas) and Chelsea (August 3/Chicago).

The BVB coach, generally not a big fan of PR appointments, only has a few days at a place for tactical training on the Mexican border in San Diego. All not perfect conditions for a renewed attack on the shell.

Nobody in Dortmund wants to talk about a goal for the season yet. Our own plans and those of the competition are too vague. Bavaria is gearing up. With national player Wirtz (20) and the top newcomers Grimaldo (27), Xhaka (30) and Hofmann (31), Leverkusen are planning a new attempt to get closer to the top. After the sell-off (Nkunku, Szoboszlai, Laimer), Leipzig is also slowly picking up.

And BVB? Facing a fateful year – once again …
