The Opening Ceremony of the Chengdu 2021 World University Games: A Dream Come True for Argentine Athlete Matías Giraudo

Yesterday the opening ceremony was held and the volleyball player from Villa María, Matías Giraudo, was the flag bearer of the Argentine delegation.

The dream is complete for Giraudo, since his sister Camila is a member of the women’s volleyball team, while one of the main authorities of the delegation is Daniela Dubois, representative of the UNVM and vice president of the Argentine university representation.

The post-pandemic edition

Student-athletes from all over the world gather in Chengdu from yesterday to August 8.

The FISU World Games (International Federation of University Sports) take place every 2 years. However, originally, Chengdu had been designated to hold the Games from the summer of 2021, but they were postponed due to the pandemic context. Due to the fact that the 2023 edition would take place in Russia (which was cancelled), FISU decided to leave the name of the competition as Chengdu 2021 World University Games.

Yesterday they were inaugurated in the People’s Republic of China. The age criteria to be eligible for each delegation is to be at least 27 years old on December 31 of the year of the event (ie, born between January 1, 1996 and December 31, 2005).

The competition program includes fifteen compulsory sports, plus three optional ones chosen by the organization (rowing, sports shooting and wushu). The 18 sports in which they compete are: athletics, badminton, basketball, diving, fencing, artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, judo, swimming, water polo, rowing, taekwondo, table tennis, tennis, archery, sport shooting, volleyball and wushu.

The Villamariense flag bearer

The Argentine team is made up of 57 athletes and will have representatives in the two branches of basketball and volleyball, artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, judo, swimming, athletics and rowing.

The graduate Daniela Dubois commented from China that “the opening act of the World University Summer Games was held in Chengdu. The 57 Argentine athletes and students paraded, and the delegation’s standard bearer was Matías Giraudo, which is a source of great pride as a Villamariense. Very exciting”.

He added that “the lights, the fireworks and the display of people from the 120 delegations from different countries, all of this was very strong in the opening ceremony.”

Expectation for the national volleyball

The Argentine university delegation, which went to China hand in hand with the Argentine University Sports Federation (FeDUA), has interesting individualities, although collectively there are expectations with volleyball.

María Daniela Dubois, dean of Human Sciences at the National University of Villa María, commented that “the first representative of Argentina to appear on the scene was the women’s basketball team, which lost to Hungary, despite winning much of the game.” ”.

He stressed that “tomorrow volleyball and men’s basketball will be presented, which have a strong chance of winning due to their potential.”

The basketball girls fell 63-49 against Hungary and will close the group stage tomorrow at 8.30 against Japan, a rival they will have to beat to reach the quarterfinals.

Rafael Candela Gentinetta stood out with 18 points and 21 rebounds (13 defensive and 8 offensive).

The national team presented an initial formation made up of Milagros Maza, Agustina Marín, Magalí Vilches, Candela Gentinetta and Georgina Buzzetti. Four of them were part of the concentration of the senior team for the 2023 AmeriCup in Mexico.
