The Future of Pallacanestro Trieste: New GM, Coach, and Challenges Ahead

After 5 troubled seasons in Serie A, spent navigating problems and looking for sponsors, to which were added the difficulties deriving from the pandemic, when stability finally arrived, for the Trieste basketball the adventure ended with an inauspicious relegation. Clubs and fans have long cherished the idea of a repechage and in this regard await the meeting of the Federal Council of the FIP on Friday 14 July.

The first step is the choice of Michael Arcieri as General Manager

The first step for the future of Pallacanestro Trieste was to find a competent GM, ready to get involved in both A and A2 and Michael Archers he accepted the challenge.

Arcieri was born in New York on October 27, 1964 of Italian-American parents and has a long experience of NBA franchises behind him (from the Nets, via Dallas, Orlando to the New York Knicks). Last year came the call from Luis Scola and his first experience as GM in a European club: Openjobmetis Varese. He ends the season also taking home the award for best LBA executive.

The words of the president Richard DeMeo. “Michael Arcieri’s proven expertise in Italian basketball is combined with his experience, NBA track record and willingness to build and implement a new vision for Pallacanestro Trieste. Mike’s deep technical knowledge of basketball is complemented by his business and strategic leadership skills, making him the ideal candidate for this important phase of the company and the team.”

The second step is the non-renewal of Marco Legovich

After 8 years Marco Legovich he will no longer sit on the Julian bench.

The comment of Richard DeMeo. “We thank Marco for his work, his passion and his dedication, as well as for the willingness shown in these weeks in which he awaited our decision which, albeit painful, has matured within the new sporting project.

The choice that we made today as a club is very difficult for all of us at Pallacanestro Trieste, but it is necessary, and derives from the fact that we are aware that we have to face a particularly complex challenge in Serie A2. The rebirth of Pallacanestro Trieste must proceed through this passage, and in this phase requires a head coach who can count on a long experience on the bench”. While this is the right decision, I would like to thank Marco personally. He was extremely welcoming upon CSG’s arrival and I enjoyed my dealings with him; even now, he shows he’s willing to give everything for the club’s success. He is a special person and has a very bright future.

Marco Legovich he entrusted his parting words to social media. “Yesterday didn’t close a simple chapter, but the last of a book that lasted 8 years. 8 years of life, sleepless nights and daydreams.

I gave you all of myself, with all my limitations, my mistakes, my desire to accompany you around Italy and let you experience as many successes and joys as possible. Our people deserve them all. You have given me the opportunity to live priceless moments and experiences starting from the promotion in Serie A, up to all the Playoff series that have followed one another over the years, making me fall in love with those 40′ home matches and with You, every time more. The bond between the Squad and our people will remain something difficult to explain in words. Feeling part of something bigger, feeling invincible, feeling loved, feeling like a Son of Trieste.

The penultimate chapter, that of May 6, is always present within me. It’s a scar that will remain indelible in my heart and unfortunately in your story, which I never wanted, you know. It’s a “crime” to our beloved city basketball, one I feel responsible for, but I will treasure, I promise. All I ask is a little more time.

Along this journey, you have put me to the test, more and more every year, almost as if to challenge me, in making me grow, in never being satisfied, in pushing me to give more every day, caring for the people who have accompanied me step by step. .

Thank you for the people you made me meet, they changed my life. Every choice, every relationship consolidated over time has made me a more aware and better person. Thanks to Eugenio for having welcomed and helped me like a son, thanks to Mario for taking risks and having courage and to the new owners for never letting me lack support, thanks to Gianluca for believing in me, giving me the opportunity to make him a job and a last thanks to my school of Don Bosco, because remembering and keeping close to one’s origins is gratitude and history to be proud of”

The new coach will be American: Jamion Christian

After Legovich’s farewell, various rumors about his successor followed, even some female names, then today the definitive name arrived: Jamion Christian.

The new coach from Trieste is originally from Virginia and comes from the NCAA environment. Born in 1982, he is one of the best young coaches in American university basketball and has 16 years of experience on the bench, 10 of which as head coach. He stands for his defense in style “mayhem”, a fast technique, focused on aggressive pressure and trapping. A defense designed to induce opponent turnovers and several steals; extra possessions that the coach wants to turn into points by preaching the protection of the ball and an intelligent construction of the 3-point shot.

It will be a challenge for him to fit into a different environment and deal with another type of player.

The words of Archers. “We are thrilled to announce Jamion Christian as head coach of Pallacanestro Trieste. He brings to Trieste 16 years of experience as a coach, of which 10 as head coach and 6 as assistant, protagonist in competitions at the highest level, with a deep passion and a proven ability to teach the game and to develop and inspire his players and the his staff. His integrity, his engaging personality, his ability to communicate, his hunger to learn and improve every day and his thirst for victory make him the ideal person to lead Pallacanestro Trieste towards a bright future. I want to give him and his family the warmest welcome to our basketball family and to Trieste”

The statements of Meo. “The choice of Jamion Christian responds to the company’s objectives and to the game that our General Manager has in mind for Trieste. It is a courageous, revolutionary choice, capable of giving substance to our motto: a rebirth of Pallacanestro Trieste that passes through the challenge and the will to do our best. It is a choice that I am sure our fans will love in a short time, because Jamion promises to bring his exceptional style to Trieste”.

The team

The renewal of the Italian players is being negotiated. Michele Ruzzier is also highly coveted in Serie A. Alessandro Lever has already been made official at Gevi Napoli. That of Francesco Candussi, instead it is a name that arouses interest. The big Friulian has already dressed the halberd colors and has played several seasons in A2 between Mantua and Verona, closing the last championship at Fortitudo Bologna.
