The 31st FISU World University Games (Chengdu Universiade) officially opened on July 28th.

The 31st FISU World University Games (Chengdu Universiade) officially opened on July 28th. Over the next 12 days, 6,500 athletes from 113 countries and regions will compete in a world-class competition facility in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. Of the 6,500 players, 3,512 are men and 2,988 are women. The breakdown of the 113 countries/regions is 35 in Asia, 36 in Europe, 15 in the Americas, 24 in Africa, and 3 in Oceania.

Track and field, swimming, taekwondo, and fencing are among the individual events that have a relatively large number of competitors. In team events, 28 teams will participate in volleyball, 27 teams in basketball, and 17 teams in water polo. The Chengdu Universiade will host 269 events in 18 sports. Archery, water polo and basketball have already started on the 27th. 11 events including martial arts, volleyball, table tennis and shooting will start on the 29th, and 17 gold medals will be awarded.
