Sweden slip into Round of 16, Jamaica celebrate first win

Sweden inflicted a heavy defeat on Italy (5-0) on Saturday on the lawn of Wellington Regional Stadium, New Zealand, and won its ticket to the knockout stages of the Women’s World Cup. For its part, Jamaica won its first victory in the World Cup against Panama (1-0) and returned to the height of France at the top of group F before the last day.

Sweden qualify for the round of 16

Sweden, reigning Olympic vice-champion, qualified for the round of 16 of the Women’s World Cup after their big victory against Italy (5-0) on Saturday July 29 in Wellington, in particular thanks to a double from the defender Amanda Ilestedt.

The Swedes punished the Italians in seven minutes at the end of the first period: first with a header from Amanda Ilestedt from a corner (39th), then thanks to Fridolina Rolfö (44th) and Stina Blackstenius (45th +1).

In the second half, Amanda Ilestedt again scored with a header following a corner (50th). At the very end of the match, striker Rebecca Blomkvist finished the festival (90th +5). They are guaranteed to finish at the top of group G.

Jamaica insures against Panama

A goal from Allyson Swaby (56th) gave the Jamaicans hope of qualifying for the round of 16, before their match against Brazil on Wednesday (12 p.m.). France, victorious over Brazil a little earlier, will aim at the same time for first place in the group against Panama, eliminated after this defeat on Saturday, in Sydney.
