Paris 2024 Olympic Games: “The experience of a lifetime”, Marie-Jo Pérec recounts her crossing the Atlantic with the flame

His voice is very distant. Communication is not very good. And yet, Marie-Jo Pérec’s happiness shines through. It was 2:30 p.m. this Wednesday afternoon when the three-time Olympic champion answered our WhatsApp call. ” Where are you ? ”, we dared as the first question, frankly banal, we admit. “Well, in the middle of the ocean,” she replied, laughing. Yes, in the middle of the Atlantic, on the Maxi-trimaran Banque Populaire with the mission of transporting the Olympic flame to Guadeloupe, and it is so well there…

With Armel Le Cléac’h and Sébastien Josse as skippers, accompanied by Marine Ltemporel, former Miss France, Hugo Rœllinger, Breton chef, and Alexis Michalik, man of the theater, she left Brest on Friday evening and is experiencing a dream that she has for us share.

“Since the beginning, I have experienced, we have experienced something exceptional. I haven’t even been very ill, just a few migraines, to say the least. It’s a sick thing. Between us, things are going really well. We are all very different, but life on board means that we share a lot of things. We laugh a lot, especially with Alexis, we talk a lot. And we still monitor the flame. For the quarters, I am in the team of Armel and Hugo. I listen to Armel a lot, it’s fascinating. Even sleeping in the bunk is not a problem. »

“The boat is moving so fast. As I speak to you, we are alone in the immensity. We are very small in the middle of this ocean, we don’t meet anyone. We have an incredible feeling of freedom. It is a grandiose experience, the experience of a lifetime. It’s even more impressive than I could have imagined. »

“Enjoy every minute”

“I was never afraid. With Armel and Sébastien, we have complete confidence. We’re going quickly. So fast. It’s almost too fast. I try to enjoy every minute of this crossing. It’s ideal for clearing your mind and thinking. Don’t use phones too much. This please me a lot. We have a lot of discussions with everyone, another form of relationship is established with everyone, we discover ourselves in a different way. »

Marie-Jo Pérec: “Despite everything, in the middle of the ocean, we stay informed about important things. The political crisis, in particular. I also follow athletics, the French medals at the European Championships. » BPCE/Vincent Curutchet

“The conditions are really perfect. It’s sunny. We are in the trade winds. It’s so magical. Well, despite everything, in the middle of the ocean, we stay informed about important things. The political crisis, in particular. I also follow athletics, the French medals at the European Championships. And, of course, Kevin Mayer’s qualification for the Games. I am so happy for him… Our arrival in Guadeloupe is scheduled for June 15 at 7 a.m. I wish it lasted longer. It is magic! »
