Stan Wawrinka Dominates First Round at Swiss Open in Gstaad

Stan Wawrinka (ATP 74) had no problem in his 1st round against Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baeña (60) at the Swiss Open in Gstaad. The Vaudois won 6-1 3-1. Hit in the back, the Spaniard gave up. Wawrinka will face Jaume Munar (110) in the round of 16.

For his return to the Oberland after ten years, Stan Wawrinka offered a show of strength. His opponent didn’t stand a chance. It was only after ten minutes that Carballes Baeña won a first rally with a service winner. Wawrinka had thus won the first 13 (!) points of the match.

Wawrinka logically pocketed the first set in just 21 minutes. The second set was a little slower, but the 38-year-old Vaudois immediately broke his opponent.

At Wimbledon, “Stan the Man” had already shown himself in great form – even in his loss to Novak Djokovic. But what is Wawrinka’s real strength at Gstaad? We will have to wait for the rest of the tournament to have a concrete answer to this question, because Carballes Baeña did not serve as a barometer. Last week he lost on clay in Salzburg against the 474th player in the world (Blaz Rola). In Gstaad, he was already suffering from neck pain before his match against Wawrinka. Pain for which he first sought treatment and finally gave up after 41 minutes.
