The life of a sports photographer is not easy. Jim Rassola photojournalist for the Sun-Sentinel, experienced it at a recent American baseball league game, where a bullet came to explode the front lens of its Sony FE 400mm f/2.8 G Master telephoto lensa lens at €12,000.

Pieces of glass have literally robbed of its lens, fortunately without hurting the photographer and the people around. At this speed, you can’t imagine what the bullet could have done if the target hadn’t stopped it. Unfortunately, the story does not end there. The photographer had indeed not taken out insurance for his photographic equipment. Despite the absence of injury, he thus finds himself with a unusable optics and whose cost of a repair is surely outside his budget – hence the interest of thinking about photo insurance, when using very expensive photo equipment for his livelihood.
Luckily for Jim Rassol, some photographer friends have uploaded a GoFundMe page to raise funds and help the unlucky photographer. However, it is important to remember that a safety net, behind which accredited photographers must be located, allows them to be protected, as well as their equipment.
Currently, the GoFundMe project has raised over $7,300, which should allow the photographer, thanks to the very strong reaction of the community, to have his lens repaired. Moreover, the photographer indicated on this page that Sony has since offered him a 400mm on loantime to repair the lens, and that they offered an additional year of Sony Pro support.
One thing is certain: Jim Rassol will surely keep this moment engraved in his memory.
