Spanish badminton is not missing one of the great events on the international calendar: the BEC World Class Junior Camp that this year takes place in Malaysia. This is an initiative through which Badminton Europe invites athletes who have excelled in the 2022 Junior European Championship to participate in a 15-day training camp.
Badminton Europe has summoned 17 athletes from 10 countries. Among them are the European women’s doubles champions, Lucía Rodríguez and Nikol Carulla, and the men’s doubles runners-up Dani Franco and Rubén García, as well as the FESBA staff coach José Antonio Crespo.
The camp is part of the World Class programme, which supports the development of Europe’s best young players and the continent’s top talents through various projects. The camp has been developed with the support of the BEC High Performance Commission.
The camp will take place from July 22 to August 5, 2023 and will give Europe’s most promising talents the opportunity to participate in Malaysian national team training at the national training center. Malaysian coaches will lead the training sessions.
“The objectives of the camp are to support the development of a high-performance mindset for the best young European players, to develop and improve specific badminton skills, but also to give players first-hand experience of training and competition conditions in Asia, as well as playing against Asian players,” explains Jacob Ohlenschlaeger, Senior Manager of Development and High Performance at BEC.
High-level training with top-level Asian players will have a positive impact on the development of young European athletes. Also, the opportunity to experience the Asian training climate and culture will be a valuable experience on the long road to becoming a world-class badminton player.
The 17 players will be trained and supported throughout the camp by highly experienced international coaches such as Anu Nieminen (Finland) and Crespo himself, former Olympians who have also shone worldwide.
