Revisiting the Legendary 1996 NBA Draft: Allen Iverson’s Revelation About Kobe Bryant

NBA (DR) / @BlacherReport (DR)

With Kobe Bryant and Allen Iverson as marvelous representatives, the 1996 Draft is one of the most legendary in history. The Answer also returned to this cuvée and made astonishing revelations. If he had been at the head of a franchise, he clearly wouldn’t have hesitated to change history.

Each year during the Draft, one or two players generally stand out and make an impression. But from time to time, certain cuvées give birth to legends that mark history. In 2012, for example, Damian Lillard and Anthony Davis were selected quite high, and they are now part of the Top 75 established by the league last year.

2012 is however not the most prestigious year when it comes to Draft. Sixteen years earlier, the big night had indeed turned out to be exceptional since it allowed Kobe Bryant and Allen Iverson to officially join the league. Rather not badly, especially when you know that they were accompanied by Steve Nash, Ray Allen or Jermaine O’Neal. This string of talents is therefore probably one of the best in history.

Allen Iverson honest about the 1996 Draft and Kobe

Allen Iverson was selected at the very top of the hierarchy. If we trust only the prize list, one would think that Kobe Bryant would come just behind but no, the Black Mamba only heard his name in thirteenth position. When we know the career he had, we say that the Lakers had a fine nose or a little luck. Allen Iverson returned to this vintage and admits that he would not have made these choices in the place of the leaders:

We had the best draft in history. Kobe was selected in thirteenth position, already. This allows you to realize how crazy this cuvée was. He was in Pick n°13, you immediately understand that the draft was special. But if I had been the Sixers, I wouldn’t have chosen myself but would have taken Kobe Bryant instead.

History can’t be rewritten, and even if they could, we suspect Philadelphia executives wouldn’t trade AI for anything given all he’s brought to the franchise. The legendary leader has indeed spent nine seasons in Pennsylvania and has had several personal successes there, including the famous title of rookie of the year despite the crazy competition.

Over these ten seasons, Iverson was All-Star seven times and won the MVP grail in the 2000-2001 season after a fabulous exercise. Beyond the statistics, he had above all developed a very special relationship with the fans. We therefore suspect that despite the legendary career of the former Laker, no one regrets this choice on the side of Philly. In any case, it is thanks to his performances in this jersey that he became a Hall of Famer…

During the 1996 Draft, several players joined the league and became legends a few years later. Among them, Allen Iverson was selected in n°1 but politely considers that Kobe Bryant deserved this place more. 76ers fans may disagree…
