Puerto Rico National Basketball Team Prepares for FIBA Basketball World Cup with Intense Training Sessions

The Puerto Rico National Basketball Team would meet this Monday night for the fourth time since it began its training sessions last Friday, days away from making its first blank, from embarking on a journey without turning back towards a tour of blanks and the FIBA Basketball World Cup, and with the notice that “soon” will be the cut of 12 players.

The last player to join the works was Tremont Waters, who joined the team on Sunday for a gym job. Waters comes from playing in the final series with the Carolina Giants.

“After the celebration I didn’t do much and it felt good to go to the gym. Today I saw the boys. We had a great time,” Waters said.

With Waters, there are 14 players training with the National Team that this Friday will be training against the Dominican Republic’s World Cup team, before beginning their trip to the headquarters of the World Cup, in this case in Manila, Philippines, with a first stop in Las Vegas, United States, to warm up there on August 7 against the United States.

“It has started very well. Everyone is well focused on their work for a summer with expectations. They themselves have their desire to make the last cut and be part of the group that will go to the World Cup. There has been a lot of intensity in practices, with a very physical game from what I have seen in the first three practices. Was expected. It is a very good group, understanding the commitment. It was very important that they understood it from day one. Since the last time we saw each other, which was in Colombia in February, there is still that vibe of winning, of togetherness”, perceived general manager Carlos Arroyo.

The manager said that the work team analyzes when to make the cut to the 12 players who will see action in the World Cup. He added that having 14 players in practice allows the coaching staff to analyze rotations. Arroyo did not specify if the 14 players will make the trip to Las Vegas and subsequent stops in Italy, Serbia and Taiwan.

The leader of the National Team, Nelson Colón, for his part, pointed out that the cut will be “soon”. He also said they look at what’s best for the team in terms of timing and for the players in terms of opportunities to make the cut.

“We are working on that, what is best for the team and give them opportunities to compete, see the combinations and have a clear idea,” he added.

After the warm-up against the Dominican Republic this Friday, the National Team will warm up again on August 7 against the United States in Las Vegas. From there, the team will travel to Italy for a scrimmage there on August 13 against the Italians. Later they will play a friendly in Belgrade against local Serbia on August 16. And finally, in the last stop before arriving in Manila, they will play against Lithuania and Latvia and on August 19 and 20 in Taiwan.

As of this Monday, there are 25 days left for the ‘flying ball’ in the World Cup. The president of the Puerto Rico Basketball Federation, Yum Ramos, said weeks ago that the World Cup teams have up to two weeks before the event to announce their final roster.

Among the 14 players in practice are, in addition to Waters, John Holland, whom they baptized as the “veteran of the group”, as well as Chris Ortiz, George Conditt IV, Aleem Ford, Ysmael Romero, Tmajh Parker, Isaiah Piñeiro, Ethan and Stephen Thompson, Phillip Wheeler, Justin Reyes, Jordan Howard, and Arnaldo Toro.

Colón added that the team’s first practices have been a continuation of what the team had been doing when the qualifying window period ended last February.
