Paraguayan Athletes Honored for their Success at the 2023 Special Olympics World Games

The Upper House declared this Thursday in its ordinary session as illustrious citizens the delegation of Paraguayan athletes who stood out for their performance in the 2023 Special Olympics World Games, held in the city of Berlin, Germany, which constitutes the sporting event largest inclusive in the world.

The athletes won 44 medals, gold, silver and bronze, after participating in different disciplines such as; rhythmic gymnastics, rhythmic skating, speed skating, swimming, badminton, artistic gymnastics, 3×3 basketball, bocce, tennis, futsal, track and field and field hockey.

In this regard, the designer of the distinction, the senator of the Authentic Radical Liberal Party (PLRA) Dionisio Amarilla said that arriving in Berlin was quite an odyssey for the Special Olympics Organization, which not only carries out work in the field of sport, but also in transversally in the field of health, education and seeking opportunities for families and those affected.

“The athletes taught us that it is possible to hold and wave the tricolor flag with great force, today it should be a challenge that an inclusive society is possible where people’s rights are not discussed. Some with several medals, but above all with the most significant medal, having silently honored our homeland, teaching us that the nation is strengthened and built from various angles and in this case from sports”, he expressed.

The delegation that represented Paraguay was made up of 55 Paraguayan athletes, 31 men and 24 women. The Special Olympics World Games are held every 4 years, with a 2-year interval between the World Summer Games and the World Winter Games.

The 16th edition of the sports competition took place from June 17 to 25 of this year for the first time in Germany. For his part, Luis Cáceres Brun, head of the Special Olympics Organization, on behalf of the athletes, thanked the parliamentarians for paying tribute to their effort and sacrifice.
