Otte and Marterer in Wimbledon in round two – peacefully eliminated

Status: 07/03/2023 10:50 p.m

Oscar Otte and Maximilian Marterer reached the second round at the All England Championships in Wimbledon on Monday (July 3rd, 2023). For Anna-Lena Friedsam and Daniel Altmaier, however, the tournament is already over.

Otte prevailed surprisingly clearly in three sets in the German duel with Dominik Koepfer. The 29-year-old from Cologne, who had to cope with many defeats and setbacks this year, won 7:5, 6:3, 7:6 (11:9). Otte has to deal with the Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka in the second round.

1st round, men’s right arrow 1st round, women’s right arrow

Previously, Marterer had also made his advancement perfect. The game of the 28-year-old from Nuremberg against the Croatian Borna Gojo was interrupted for around 90 minutes on an outdoor court due to the rain. But Marterer stayed cool and prevailed 7:5, 6:7 (8:10), 6:3, 6:4. As in the previous year, the Franconian is in round two. Marterer converted his fifth match point after 2:46 hours and now meets the American Michael Mmoh. Like Otte, he only qualified for the main draw after qualifying.

Peaceful is subject to parks

At the start of the first day of the tournament, Anna-Lena Friedsam lost 4:6, 3:6 to the American Alycia Parks (22) in a tough 1:41 hours.

It was her fourth defeat in her fourth duel with the current number 51 in the world rankings. In the largely balanced match at a moderate level, Friedsam, who was ranked 87th and had already reached the third round in the All England Club in 2016, initially conceded the decisive break to 3: 5 in the first set. A short time later she lost her service in the first game of the second round, also losing the match.

Altmaier, who was recently injured, was also eliminated

Daniel Altmaier is also eliminated. The Davis Cup professional was beaten by the Australian Aleksandar Vukic 3: 6, 6: 7 (1: 7), 6: 3, 5: 7. Altmaier (24) was struggling with a strain in the run-up to the classic lawn game and therefore traveled to England with little match practice.

Hanfmann’s match interrupted

On the other hand, Yannick Hanfmann from Karlsruhe could not bring his big fight against the world number ninth Taylor Fritz (USA) to an end: When the score was 4: 6, 6: 2, 6: 4, 5: 7 and 2: 3, the match was canceled due to the onset of darkness interrupted and will be continued on Tuesday.

Like Alexander Zverev, the three other German women will only enter the tournament on Tuesday. Tatjana Maria, who reached the semi-finals last year, meets Sorana Cristea, last year’s quarter-finalist Jule Niemeier meets French Open finalist Karolina Muchova (Czech Republic). Tamara Korpatsch, who entered the main draw as “Lucky Loser”, will play against Canadian qualifier Carol Zhao.

Swiatek easy on

World number one Iga Swiatek won her opening match without any problems. In the 6:1, 6:3 against Zhu Lin from China, the Pole was only stopped by the rain: the roof over Court 1 was closed during the compulsory break.

Last week, the three-time French Open winner canceled her participation in the semi-finals of the tournament in Bad Homburg due to being unwell. In Wimbledon, the 22-year-old has not yet made it past the round of 16.

Djokovic wipes lawn “dry”

Defending champion Novak Djokovic has also cleared his opening hurdle. The 36-year-old Serb won against Argentinian Pedro Cachin 6: 3, 6: 3, 7: 6 (7: 4). The record champion at Grand Slam tournaments did not lose his rhythm even when it rained. Because the roof over Center Court was closed too late when it started to rain, the game was interrupted for more than an hour. The lawn in the most famous tennis stadium in the world had become too wet to be able to quickly continue the match under the closed roof.

Djokovic lent a hand himself and wiped the lawn with a towel. In addition, tournament employees tried to dry the wet areas with leaf blowers. At the time of the stoppage, Djokovic had just won the first set.

Schedule for Tuesday, July 4 Matches with German participation, 1st round, start of play at 12:00 p.m. CEST
