Not saved by a witty master stroke in the last seconds; Latvian U-20 basketball players start the B division tournament of the European Championship with a loss in extra time to the Netherlands

Less than four seconds before the end of regular time, when Latvia was leading 50:55, Kristofer Karlsson was delayed in the execution of a long shot. He threw the first two free throws, but the third one was intentionally sent against the shield, he got the rebound himself and ran to the corner of the field, from where he made a long shot – 55:55.

In overtime, Latvians scored the only points eight seconds before the end, when Carlson made two of three free throws.

Rihards Vāvers was the top scorer in the Latvian national team with 17 points, Karlsons scored 13 points, both having five rebounds each. Fred Paul Bagatski intercepted four balls and scored eight points, but made only one of ten long shots, while Daniils Smirnovs collected 13 balls under the basket.

For the winners, Jibe Siking had 15 points, while Juri Fritz had 14 points and 11 rebounds.

In this match, the Latvian national team made significantly more mistakes (25/15) and scored fewer points in quick transitions (6:18).

In the continuation of the subgroup tournament, the Latvians will meet with the national teams of Albania, Finland and Switzerland. The two best teams of each subgroup will enter the quarter-finals and continue the fight for the three tickets to the A division.

The team includes players with experience in the Latvian-Estonian League and the National League, as well as in the second league of Italy and Germany and US student basketball. Seven players have already participated in at least one European Youth Championship, but five were deprived of such opportunities by the Covid-19 pandemic.
