The manager of the titled Cameroonian wrestler Francis Ngannou (20-3-3 MMA), Markel Martin, revealed several details about the planned duel against the British boxer Tyson Fury (33-0-1) in the program “The MMA Hour”.
After several months of unsuccessful negotiations with Oleksandr Usik, Fury’s next opponent became known this week – it will be one of the greatest MMA fighters of all time, Ngannou, who will make his boxing debut. I know they will be proven wrong. Such a fight will change Francis’s life. It’s exactly what we planned and envisioned, so we’re happy.”
The 36-year-old Ngannou fought his last UFC fight last January, defending the championship title in the heavyweight category against Cyril Gaines. The Cameroonian never returned to the Octagon because he was unable to agree on a new contract with the UFC. Martin admitted that Ngannou will earn more from this fight against Fury than he has in his entire UFC career. “Even as a champion, to make that kind of money, he’d have to fight multiple times to even come close to the fee for that fight,” Ngannou’s manager said.
Although Ngannou and Fury have been officially confirmed and it is known that the fight will take place under standard boxing rules, there are still some uncertainties, such as whether the star fighters will fight for Fury’s WBC belt or if it will just be a test fight. Ngannou’s manager could not confirm this either, but he said both sides are trying to work on a solution.
“Of course, promoters will be promoters and try to disparage the other side as much as possible, but it’s going to be a real fight,” Martin said. “We didn’t sign up to go into the ring and clap our hands – no, no, no, this will be a real fight. Regarding what will happen with the WBC belt – we plan to talk to the World Boxing Council to get a license. You never know, maybe there will be an opportunity to fight for his belt, but I’m not sure about that because it’s Fury’s decision. But I can say that for our part, we are negotiating and we will do everything in our power – we want the fight to count on Fury’s professional record.”
