New York Mets Trade Cy Young Winner Max Scherzer to Texas Rangers

The New York Mets reached an agreement to exchange the three-time Cy Young Award winner, Max Scherzer, to the Texas Rangers, as published by the official website of Major League Baseball (MLB), citing a source.

According to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, Scherzer would have to waive his deal-veto clause in order for the trade to go through. For this reason the teams have not made the deal publicly official.

The Rangers are first in the Western Division of the American League with a record of 60-44, with a slim advantage of only two games over the Houston Astros, so they seek to reinforce their squad that this year seems to have meshed after a couple of signatures billionaires at the end of 2021 and that did not pay dividends immediately in the 2022 season, as were the cases of shortstops Corey Seager, who agreed with Texas for $325 million, and Marcus Semien for $175 million.

New York, by contrast, is having yet another disappointing season. The Mets remain behind in fourth place in the East Division of the National League with a negative record of 49-54, 17 games from first place, and 6.5 games from the third and last place towards the playoffs via the ‘wild cards’.

If the trade for Scherzer goes through, the Rangers would be reinforcing their pitching staff, compensating for the departure of one former Mets member for another. Jacob deGrom, acquired in the free agency timeout for $185 million, underwent season-ending elbow surgery in June.

Scherzer is in the last guaranteed year of a two-year, $86.67 million deal, though he does have an $43.3 million player option for 2024. He hasn’t been as effective in 2023 at 9-4 with a 4.01 ERA, but he’s still a luxury pitcher especially with a view to the postseason. He has 121 strikeouts in 107.2 innings.

If Texas makes the playoffs, it would be the first time it has done so since 2016.
