NBA Approves Two Rule Changes for 2023-2024 Season: Second Challenge for Coaches and Anti-Flopping Policy

The NBA has approved in a meeting in the NBA 2K24 Summer League two rule changes that will take effect in the 2023-2024 season: and second ‘challenge’ (review) for the coach if he succeeds in the first and a penalty for ‘flopping’ (faking or exaggerating contacts to signal personal fouls).

The committee that has unanimously recommended to the NBA the application of these two new rules is made up of players, union representatives, coaches, owners, executives and referees.

Technicians and franchises had been fighting for a second ‘challenge’ (review) for years. From now on, if a team succeeds with a ‘challenge’, they will have the opportunity to ask for a second later.

The ‘anti flopping’ rule will also be implemented that when a referee whistles ‘flopping’ (pretending or exaggerating to signal a personal foul) call a non-unsportsmanlike technical foul to the team of the offending players, and the opposing team will get a free kick.

The umpires will not have to stop play to call a flop, as they can wait until play is stopped, if necessary, to call it.

The flopping technique will not count for a possible expulsion of the penalized player.

This ‘anti flopping’ standard will be used on a trial basis for one year.
