Much-discussed tax a fact: ‘fun tax’ on GP tickets in Zandvoort | formula 1

The introduction of the much-discussed ‘entertainment tax’ in Zandvoort is a fact. Due to the so-called fun tax, visitors to the Grand Prix of the Netherlands in 2024 and 2025 will have to pay a surcharge of a few euros on the tickets.

The proposal was submitted by the mayor and aldermen and was approved by the city council on Tuesday. According to the council, the Formula 1 race costs the municipality about 800,000 euros every year.

These costs are covered with the fun tax of 3 euros per ticket. It won’t make much of a difference to the spectators; the tickets for most grandstands already cost hundreds of euros.

Circuit director Robert van Overdijk said last month that he was opposed to the fun tax. “We do not agree. We are actually bringing a lot of money with this event. The municipality can live on that for years to come.”

The organization tried to get the municipality to change its mind

The organization of the Grand Prix of the Netherlands had the hope last month that the fun tax would not be introduced. Talks were held with the parties involved, but the city council and the municipal executive were not convinced.

The entertainment tax only applies to events in the municipality of Zandvoort that attract more than 10,000 visitors in a day. With more than 100,000 visitors during the weekend, the Zandvoort Grand Prix is one of the few events that can reach that number.

The Grand Prix of the Netherlands will be held on Sunday 27 August this year. Max Verstappen won the race in 2022 and 2021. Formula 1 returned to the iconic circuit in the dunes in 2021 after a 36-year absence.
