Martin Hinteregger is happy to have left professional football behind. He scoffs at his former national team colleague David Alaba.

Frankfurt am Main – Martin Hinteregger and David Alaba are two completely different characters. Probably the main reason why one still plays at Real Madrid – while the other has long since lived back in his 300-strong village in Carinthia. And shoots deer from 100 meters away.

Ex-Eintracht star Hinteregger: “In football and in politics, people only lie”

Eintracht hero Hinteregger turned his back on professional football last year. Why? Because he didn’t want to anymore. To the business, the pressure, the hypocrisy. In an interview with the Austrian magazine profile he justifies his conclusion bluntly – as we know it.

“Everyone I know says yes and amen to everything,” he criticizes the handling of the media. “In football and in politics” people “only lie,” says Hinteregger. As a prime example of this, he cites a long-time colleague in the Austrian national team: David Alaba.

Hinteregger takes Alaba to his chest

“This is the perfect professional, he’s really smart,” praises the ex-SBU star before he criticizes. “But I always ask myself why journalists want to interview him at all – I can interview the stone pine over there right away. It says a lot,” says the 30-year-old.

He had already zeroed in on Alaba once before. “David Alaba has been saying the same things after the game for ten years. It’s okay, but that’s just not his opinion,” he said a few months ago.

SBU hero Hinteregger denounces: “No one dares to speak their mind anymore”

“No one dares to speak their mind anymore,” he denounces. “The worst interviews are given by sports directors – they have to lie about every question so that there is no unrest.” Hinteregger himself was rarely straightforward in interviews either. “Once a year maybe, but for the other 100 interviews I lied as much as I could. The main thing is that there’s nothing in the newspaper the next day,” he admits.

The 2022 Europa League winner lives in his home village of Sirnitz and plays for the local club. When he was a professional, he kept falling into a hole – he couldn’t get along with the public, and he found himself in the center of it after his promotion to Eintracht at the latest.

“Some players throw up before the game because the pressure is so great,” he reveals. “I would have been satisfied with a tenth of my salary if everything had been a bit more normal.” It’s already a bit more normal in Sirnitz. Hinteregger describes his perfect life like this: “Eat when you are hungry. Sleep when you’re tired.” (epp)
