Islam Makhachev will defend his lightweight title against former champion Charles Oliveira in a rematch in the main event of UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi on October 21. Makhachev is number two in the pound-for-pound ranking while Oliveira is sixth according to the UFC, both met in October of last year where Makhachev submitted Oliviera via submission in the second round and was proclaimed the 155-pound champion.
Makhachev is 24-1 and is coming off a unanimous decision win over featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 284 in February. The Russian has 12 consecutive victories in the UFC and his only defeat was in 2015 against Adriano Martins by way of knockout. Oliviera, for his part, is coming off beating Beneil Dariush by first-round TKO at UFC 289 last month and at 34-9 in his career, the 33-year-old Brazilian has the most finishes (20) and submission wins (16) in UFC history.
The card will also feature the fight between Paulo Costa and Khamzat Chimaev, the latter is undefeated with a record of 12 wins and 0 losses, while Paulo Costa comes from beating Luke Rockhold by unanimous decision and has a record of 14-2 in his career.
