Introducing Youth to Bowls: A Day at the GS Bocciofila Bederese

Average reading time: 3 minutes

(by Roberto Bramani Araldi) The idea was born almost by chance, at the end of the month of May Judo Bu-sen of Luino Of bring the youth to the summer camp organized for over ten years a Montegrino to face an innovative experience: a full day on the bowling greens of the GS Bocciofila Bederesea sports club that has long been open to young people.

All very simple and, as such, equally functional. A phone call, a meeting of the creators Daniela Parisi e Leonard Marano at the bowling alley with local managers to find dates and times to realize the event.

Even an event, but doesn’t that seem a bit excessive?

Event for sure, why move 35 boys aged between 7 and 14who for the most part do not even know how those round objects are constructed, perhaps seen in passing on some sandy beach bordering the sea, called bowls, it is not easy at all, but not only that, once they arrive at their destination, being able to interest them, to involve them so that they are not only engaged in something different, but can find a dawn, a beginning, a remnant of fascination for this sport.

La Bederese, in addition to having founded the Ball Primary Schooltravels promotional paths for young people, through agreements with Parishes of Valtravaglia organized by the volcanic Don Luca Ciottiso in the summer, for a couple of hours a week, small groups of a dozen young people try to handle bowls, to get to know them.

If then love will start, it’s all to be discoveredthe variables are so numerous, from families, from competition with other sports that potentially possess a higher attractive power, up to the sirens exercised by growth, inherent in the very nature of man, that deluding oneself that one has discovered the panacea for all success would really be an operation of considerable immaturity.

Thus, on July 19, they arrive in droves, cheerful shamans, bursting with vitality, to try their hand not only with the first rudiments of bowling science, but also to face a match of threes – to eight points, with direct elimination – with the only rule of the bowl being void when it touches the side or bottom boards.

Enthusiasm for the novelty and for the fascination of competition, an always compelling component for any sport practiced, becomes a source of fun and excitement and for Daniela and Leonardo, assisted by Elena’s pyrotechnics and by the calm but efficient Ambra and Pamela, the attempt to contain it is a titanic commitment. Equally absorbing was the contribution of the Bederese technicians with the usually commendable Silvano Guidoni, assisted by Mario Tartaglia and Gianfranco Milani.

The matches continue throughout the morning with the triads prepared with balance – according to age, in order to avoid obvious imbalances – interruption for lunch, eaten packed inside the bowling alley structure, and resumed in the afternoon between exaltation and small disappointments, the former accentuated by cries of jubilation, the others accompanied by a modicum of sadness, as is inevitable when faced with defeat.

In the end the very final which sees the trio of Amelia, Giorgia and Federico triumph who are at a disadvantage for the entire first part of the match, recover until the final triumph.

The award ceremony, the delivery of the small bowls with the “Meeting with bowls” tag, immortalises the day for the little performers who admire them, pamper them with a light in their gaze that is difficult to define, between joy, wonder and pride.

Some approach to ask if they can attend the Bowls School, want to be informed of the costs and when they hear that everything is free, except for the parents’ commitment to take them to the bowling alley, they seem particularly happy: will they come? Will they continue if they start? Will they choose bowls as one of the sports to practice? Who knows, the certainty remains that this is the path to take to arouse some vocations and see the number of practitioners grow again.

On Saturday 22nd, in Rome, our top youngsters in the European Junior Championships Raffa did themselves honor, reaping successes in series – 4 golds, 2 silvers, 1 bronze -: “sursum corda” and we hope it is not just a Eucharistic expression, but has a driving effect for an ever more consistent expansion of the base!
