Introducing ‘Pick & Shoot!’: The Battle-style Garbage Pick-up Game at the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 in Okinawa

At the FIBA ​​Basketball World Cup 2023, which will be held in the Philippines, Indonesia, and Japan (Okinawa) in August 2023, the mission is to widely communicate environmental conservation efforts through the official mascot “JIP,” which is powered by the power of recycling. As part of this activity, we are pleased to announce that we have decided to hold a battle-style garbage pick-up game “Pick & Shoot!”, which incorporates newly devised basketball rules, in Okinawa City, Okinawa Prefecture, where the World Cup will be held.

This year’s “Pick & Shoot!” will feature mascot Gordy from the Ryukyu Golden Kings, who belong to B.LEAGUE, the tournament’s local ambassadors, and Garage Sale Gori, an entertainer from Okinawa Prefecture. From today, July 21 (Friday), general participants will be recruited, so if you would like to participate, please check the application requirements below and apply using the dedicated form.

Also, on the day of the event, the “FIBA BASKETBALL WORLD CUP 2023 – ONE MONTH TO GO FESTIVAL IN OKINAWA –” will be held to commemorate one month before the tournament, and on the day of the World Cup, various contents and events will be held inside and outside the Okinawa Arena. (free entrance)

■ What is “Pick & Shoot!”?
Competitive garbage pick-up game that incorporates the rules of basketball. Garbage bags are likened to basketballs, and 2 points are given for general garbage and 3 points for recyclable garbage. Activities to deepen understanding of environmental conservation such as cleanup of the local area and sorting of recyclable waste while enjoying the game elements of basketball, such as penalties (point deductions) for fouls that are not carried out in fair play, and holding team strategy meetings.

Since February 2023, the FIBA ​​Basketball World Cup 2023 Japan Organizing Committee has been implementing the “DREAM BIG OKINAWA” project to provide various opportunities for children through the tournament. On June 5th (Monday), which is World Environment Day, we announced that we will launch “Meet the Environment” as a new pillar of our “DREAM BIG OKINAWA” activities, and that we will expand this program not only in Okinawa but throughout Japan. “Pick & Shoot!” was devised as part of this “Meet the Environment”, and will be rolled out throughout Japan, starting with Hokkaido on Saturday, July 15th.
