“I wanted to go abroad, but then AA Gent came”

Over the past few days, Hein Vanhaezebrouck once again urged the board of AA Gent for extra reinforcement, because he does not think his core is wide enough to be able to fight on three fronts. However, a number of acquisitions have already landed in the Ghelamco Arena, with the Buffalos remarkably often seeking refuge in their own country. Three of the four newcomers came from another Belgian club.

The most notable transfer is perhaps that of Ismaël Kandouss. After all, Ghent managed to pluck the Moroccan defender from Union, where he has been a key player in recent years. It is somewhat surprising that he is now taking the step to a direct competitor who has finished below Union in the last two seasons.

But Kandouss had his reasons for choosing Ghent. “Initially I absolutely wanted to go to a new competition when I left Union,” he admits in La Dernière Heure. “But I changed my mind when Ghent came knocking. That is still a big club in Belgium and thanks to this transfer I can be a little closer to my family, who live in Dunkirk. I would like us to qualify for the Conference League and then play for the prizes in the Jupiler Pro League.”

Speeding up transfers?

His trainer will probably be happy with Kandouss’ ambition, although it remains to be seen whether it will also succeed in realizing it. Last season, Genk often had to fish in the youth to get to eighteen players and that does not seem to change this season. The fact that the takeover of the club has finally been completed may accelerate the transfer activities in the coming weeks.
