Horst Nauen: From Riding Instructor to Sports Journalist – A Career of Passion and Dedication

From riding instructor to sports journalist: This is how you can describe Horst Nauen’s professional career, albeit greatly abbreviated. Born in Krefeld, he has long felt at home in Hilden. Read the interview with our citizen reporter of the month July here.

Why did you become a citizen reporter ten years ago?
Exactly 10 years ago I withdrew from the big journalistic stage in small stages. But I didn’t want to sit at home and sort through stamps, I decided to continue working as a journalist for the cities of Hilden, Haan and Solingen on a modest scale. With the Funke Media Group’s local compass community, I have found the ideal media platform for me to publish reports, photos and videos.

When and how did you get into journalism?
During my work as a riding instructor, trainer for horses and course leader of various riding courses, I reported on various tournament events in words and pictures in a well-known equestrian sport magazine. After a few articles, the editors asked if I could imagine intensifying the reporting on equestrian events. It was a lot of fun for me and I now knew that I wanted to take a different professional path and went to a journalism school.

Do you have a favorite topic that you particularly like to report on?
Yes, there are quite a few: The world and European championships in the various equestrian disciplines and the collaboration with ARD sports coordinator Hans Heinrich Isenbart and sports journalist Armin Basche (ZDF). To report from Messe Essen – via EQUITANA (the world’s largest equestrian sports fair), Techno-Classica Essen, Motorshow, Reise + Camping and from the Düsseldorf trade fair – the “boot” (world’s largest water sports fair). The Tour de France and Judo Grand Slam Düsseldorf, fencing, galloping, motor sports on the Nürburgring and vintage car events or federal and state garden shows were always very pleasant reports for me.
I have also been very happy to accompany the ministers of our state government on various dates over the past 15 years in order to report in words, pictures and running pictures.

What do you do when you are not reporting in words and pictures?
Hearty breakfasts and long walks through the beautiful forests and landscapes of North Rhine-Westphalia. TV evenings with animal and city documentaries, crime scene thrillers, music programs and especially the WDR program “Beautiful”. Of course I also watch football and other sports.

What else should we know about you?
I always try to think positively. For me, animals are creatures that are equal to humans and have the same right to exist. Equality between men and women is a matter of course, which unfortunately has not yet reached everyone’s mind. It is not the position or wealth of other people that is important to me, only their character counts. I condemn violent people and especially those who attack, insult or hinder rescue workers such as police, paramedics and fire brigade in their work.

What was your journalistic experience?
I got to know many very prominent women and men, many I remembered very well because of their very positive human qualities, such as pop singer Roy Black, show jumpers Fritz Tiedemann and Hans Günter Winkler, jockey legend Hein Bollow, entrepreneur Klaus Fritzsching and Classic car restorer Michael Moths and a few less prominent people but really great people with a big heart.

You are a child of the Rhineland. What makes Hilden a place of residence?
In fact, I was born in the velvet and silk city of Krefeld and like the landscape to the left and right of the Rhine. I actually live in Solingen-Gräfrath and feel very comfortable in the ‘city triangle’ of Haan and Hilden. Hilden’s city center is impressive and has a special flair and charm that I really like. On the outskirts there are wonderful forest, heath and lake landscapes for recreation and relaxation. The city’s rich cultural and leisure program is also well received by me and most of the residents.

Where do you often meet? Which is your favorite place?
At various events in the city of Hilden. My favorite place is the Elbsee and the Hildener Heide.

How do you experience the local compass community? How is the feedback on your posts?
I am happy that I can easily upload my current photos with the great platform of Local Compass, in order to then complete and publish them with a report and possibly a video. The feedback on my posts varies between good and very good, depending on the topic.
