Palko, Marton, Bence – and Pal: Hertha BSC starts the second division season with the Dardais family clan. The composition of the squad is quite delicate and harbors the potential for conflict. But Hertha also offers the fans an important asset.

The master giver? darday The goalscorer? darday United in the jubilee cluster? Dardai, Dardai, Dardai – and Dardai. What sounds like a casual family kick on the soccer field may soon be reality at Hertha BSC in the 2nd Bundesliga. The family reunification of the Dardais makes for an unusual constellation – and certainly harbors the potential for conflict.

The sons Palko (24), Marton (21) and Bence (17) train under veteran coach Pal Dardai. Nevertheless, there should be no talk of nepotism. “The players,” said Dardai senior on Thursday, meaning the entire squad, “are all my sons.”

The Dardai quartet at Hertha has been complete since Tuesday. Attacking player Palko returned to his Berlin youth club after two and a half years at Hungarian first division club Fehervar FC. The contact, it is said, existed for almost half a year – i.e. before Dardais was reinstalled as head coach in April. Palko, who played his last competitive game for the blue and whites in April 2019 against the opponent of the opening match in the evening, Fortuna Düsseldorf (8.30 p.m. / Sky and Sport1 and in the live ticker on ntv.de), is said to have a gap in the squad close offensive. “It’s the best feeling ever to be back where I played from a young age,” said the eldest of the three brothers.

Marton Dardai: “Must show double”

The fact that he will be working with family members in the future did not play a role in the decision-making process. The decisive factor was the Hertha management, which “definitely wanted to do the whole thing,” said Palko Dardai: “I also already know the constellation with my father as a coach – both from the youngsters and the professionals. That’s nothing new for me .”

This is part of the tradition among the Dardais. Pal Dardai trained under his father, now he shoos his own sons across the lawn. The father role then rests. At work, Dardai is just a coach – and he has to be. The composition of the squad is quite tricky. Dardai runs the risk that – internally and externally – decisions in favor of his sons could be interpreted negatively.

The sons do not see their father being treated preferentially – on the contrary. “Of course he treats me a bit more strictly so that it doesn’t come across as that I’m preferred – but the boys feel that too,” said Marton Dardai recently to the “Kicker”: “It’s more difficult to prove myself in the team. I must of course show twice.” The squad places are sportingly justified. The trio played in the youth teams of the DFB, Palko made his debut in the Hungarian national team last year. Bence, who attracted attention in the preparation, recently became European champion with the German U17.

In terms of sport, the Dardais can catch the crashed Hertha. After years of alienation and financial megalomania, they also offer fans an important asset: identification. Pal Dardai is the club’s record player. As head coach, he is looking after the team for the third time. The connection is great. Together with the family clan, the return to the Bundesliga should now be successful.
