French Prodigy Victor Wembanyama to Skip Rest of NBA Summer League, Spurs Stick to Plan

French prodigy Victor Wembanyama, first choice of the NBA draft last month, will not play, as expected, the rest of the Summer League with San Antonio, several American media reported on Monday.

According to the San Antonio Express-News and ESPN, the Spurs have decided to stick to their initial plan to spare the 19-year-old player (2.24 m), author of a long season with his former club Boulogne- Levallois

After a shy first game against Charlotte on Friday and a brilliant second against Portland (27 points, 12 rebounds) on Sunday, the 19-year-old pivot will not be aligned for the rest of this summer tournament, which notably allows NBA franchises to launch their new recruits.

Wembanyama himself admitted last week that he didn’t expect to play more than twice in the Summer League. He said on Sunday that he was looking forward to taking a vacation and getting ready for the start of the NBA regular season in October. “Wemby” skipped Mondial-2023 (August 25-September 10) with the France team to focus on his first season with Spurs.

Wembanyama’s arrival has sparked excitement in the United States, where his potential is considered one of the highest in NBA history.
