Former NFL Quarterback Tim Tebow Joins Hockey as Co-Owner of Expansion Team

After football and baseball, it’s now hockey that ex-NFL quarterback Tim Tebow turns to for his next prayer.

The 35-year-old, who has become known as much for his unwavering faith as for his unlikely comebacks on the pitch, becomes co-owner of an expansion team in the East Coast League (ECHL).

Lake Tahoe, Nevada is where Tebow’s next adventure in the sport will be, beginning in the 2024-25 season. It will be the 29th franchise in the circuit, which is increasingly expanding its reach towards the central and western United States.

The team will play at the Tahoe Blue Event Center, a 4,200-seat arena that probably has nothing to envy to that of the Arizona Coyotes in the NHL (but that’s a whole other story).

“I love that sport unites everyone from all walks of life in a spirit of camaraderie and competition. I am grateful to have the opportunity to bring hockey to the Tahoe area to allow fans and families to create memories for years to come,” Tebow said in a statement.

From the NFL to baseball

Tebow had a knack for showing off with the University of Florida Gators, guiding them to two national championships in 2007 and 2009.

He was always a controversial player due to his unorthodox style. Despite his successes, his qualities as a passer and his technical skills have always raised doubts.

Tebow was still a first-round NFL pick when the Denver Broncos picked him in 2010. A year later, he was captivating the nation with his many last-minute comebacks, despite performances often miserable, except in crisis situations.

He was traded to the New York Jets and after a season to forget, unsuccessful tries with the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles led him to turn to baseball.

From 2016 to 2021, he failed to break into the New York Mets organization. He returned to the NFL in 2021 when he was invited to camp with the Jacksonville Jaguars. His conversion to the tight end position was a blank.

Throughout his career, Tebow has made a name for himself by taking one knee to the ground in a prayer position after his best moments on the court.
