Former Ajax director Edwin van der Sar is still in intensive care after his cerebral haemorrhage, but can communicate with his family members. His wife Annemarie van der Sar reports this in an update on his situation on Tuesday.
“Edwin is still in intensive care, but is stable. He is not in danger of life. Every time we visit him, he is able to communicate with us. We have to wait patiently to see how his situation will develop,” writes Annemarie van of Sar.
Van der Sar has been in hospital since Friday after he was struck by a hemorrhage around the brain on a Croatian island. The driver who recently left Ajax was transported to the hospital by helicopter.
Ajax reported on Friday that the former keeper was already out of danger at that time. It is the second time that the Van der Sar family has to deal with such a drama: Annemarie van der Sar was hit by a cerebral hemorrhage in 2009.
Her recovery took a long time. In 2017, Van der Sar stated that his wife was on her way back and doing well. After the incident, he started his own foundation for people with brain injuries. The foundation started working together with the Hersenstichting in 2021.
Van der Sar stopped at Ajax a few weeks ago
About a month and a half ago, Van der Sar announced that he would stop as general manager of Ajax. “After almost eleven years on the board, I am exhausted. I now need to distance myself, relax and do other things,” he said when he left.
The former international has been director of Ajax since 2013. Together with technical director Marc Overmars, Van der Sar put the club back on the international map. In the past season, it was significantly less sporty at the club.
As a player, Van der Sar himself wore the shirt of Ajax for the lion’s share of his career. He also played for Manchester United, Fulham and Juventus. The former goalkeeper played 130 times for the Orange squad, making it a record international for the Netherlands for a long time.
