Rui Pinto’s defense came forward to accuse the Public Ministry (MP) of wanting to “eternalize the judicial path” of the creator of Football Leaks, who was accused of 337 new computer crimes.
«The present accusation is part of the Public Prosecutor’s Office’s strategy to perpetuate Rui Pinto’s judicial career, since facts allegedly occurred between 2016 and 2019 are at stake and that, by choice of Mrs. Public Prosecutor, were not included in the process whose judgment has already been carried out and whose reading of the judgment is scheduled for the next 13th», stresses Rui Pinto’s defense team, in a statement sent to the Lusa agency.
Rui Pinto was accused of 377 crimes related to accessing emails from Benfica and other clubs, Liga, companies, lawyers, judges, prosecutors, Tax Authority and National Internal Security Network even before knowing the decision of the Football Leaks trial, in which he is responsible for 90 crimes.
«It should be noted that, while deducing this new accusation from old facts, Mrs. Prosecutor announces that there will still be a third lawsuit against Rui Pinto for other facts that also occurred between 2016 and 2019 and that lead back to the same type of crimes, but that Mrs. Prosecutor also decided not to include this second process, based on personal circumstances and absolutely unrelated to the proper functioning of justice», stress lawyers Francisco Teixeira da Mota, William Bourdon and Luísa Teixeira da Mota.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office has another investigation underway about alleged access to the computer system and emails of FC Porto, Nacional, Tondela, Câmara de Cascais and its president, Carlos Carreiras, the companyPromolor – owned by former Benfica president Luís Filipe Vieira – and other law firms.
«This perverse understanding that the facts of a case can be successively divided and prolonged in new cases, does not aim to achieve justice, but, rather, to place Rui Pinto in an interminable legal battle in which he finds himself in inequality of arms with the prosecution, thus seriously violating their rights of defense and the basic principles that govern criminal law, in national and international terms, namely the right to justice within a reasonable time”, conclude the lawyers.
