Unusual situation at Wimbledon. Champagne in the stands forced the referee’s reaction
During the third round match between Russians Anastazja Potapova (23rd WTA) and Mirra Andreyeva (102nd WTA) after the first exchange, the referee had to address the fans. This was due to their inappropriate behavior.
“Ladies and gentlemen, if you open a bottle of champagne, don’t do it when the players are about to serve,” said referee John Blom. Potapova couldn’t help smiling and nodded her head in confirmation of these words, the commentators were also amused, and the audience began to applaud. “The most Wimbledon warning ever” – the whole situation was commented on the official profile of the tournament in social media.
This is not the first time a Wimbledon referee has had to intervene over champagne. The tennis.com portal recalled the situation four years ago, when a cork flew onto the pitch during Benoit Paire’s match with Jiri Vesely. The referee then stopped the game and warned the fans. It is worth adding that according to the regulations, “all corked bottles, including champagne and sparkling wine, must be opened before being brought into the stands”.

The confusion at the beginning of the meeting may have slightly distracted both players, which resulted in three breaks in the first three games. In the end, 16-year-old Andreyeva was better in this match. After winning 6:2, 7:5 she advanced to the fourth round. There she will face the American Madison Keys (18th WTA).
