Nintendo Celebrates 35 Years of Game Boy with New Free Games for Nintendo Switch Online Subscribers

Il 2024 It’s a year to remember for all Nintendo fans: this year, in fact, we celebrate the 35th birthday of the Game Boythe portable console launched in 1989 (to be precise, the April 21st of that year). For the occasion, the Japanese company has decided to give a gift to its users who subscribe to Nintendo Switch Online.

They have been added to the subscription service catalog 3 new free games, to be precise, the titles that were available with the launch of the console. These are three great classics: Alleyway, Baseball e Super Mario Land. Among other things, Nintendo has also released a gameplay video showing the three games in action.

Super Mario Land

This version of Super Mario was made directly by Nintendo and not by the original game team, composed of Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka. To be precise, Super Mario Land was signed by R&D1, the team led by Satoru Okada, who together with Gunpei Yokoi designed the Game Boy.

The title in question is rather short but was considered ideal for showing off the features of the portable console.

Baseball

Baseball is basically the same baseball game that R&D1 made in 1983 for the NES. This version, however, included new features, such as multiplayer modes and music, which were different from the NES version.

Alleyway

This game, similar to Breakout, consists of destroying all the bricks in each level using a ball and a rectangular racket (which can only move horizontally). The only thing to avoid is letting the ball fall to the bottom of the screen. The ball only makes angles of 15°, 30° and 45°.
