Cuba Wins Three Medals at Pan American Judo Open in Peru

Havana, Jul 24 (ACN) Cuba won a gold, a silver and a bronze medal, and finished in third place (3-1-1), behind the host Peru (3-4-2) and Brazil (3-2-1), after two days of action at the Videna Sports Center 3 in the Peruvian capital.

The information panel of the Pan American Judo Confederation (CPJ) reported via WhatsApp that the title this Sunday was achieved by Maikel Mkencie, in the 81 kilograms (kg), silver, Kaliema Antomarchi (78 kg) and bronze, Liester Cardona (100 kg).

Mkencie won the crown at the rate of Ippon, the first of these against the Haitian Hasley Petit-Frere, the second against the Salvadoran G. López Aguilera and the third, against the Brazilian Lincolh Neves, in the discussion of the gold medal.

Keliema also got the podium, but the silver step, by way of the Ippon, with the victorious debut against the Puerto Rican Sairy Colón and the setback suffered with the Brazilian champion Samanta Soares.

For the bronze, Cardona opened losing by ippon against the Canadian Benjamín Hendrick, but later won the same way against the Bahamian Alex Strachan and the American LA Smith, the latter in the fight for the bronze metal.

Mexico (2-0-0), the United States (1-2-1), Canada (1-1-4) and Belgium (1-0-0) finished from the fourth to the seventh step of the standings, a quartet that completed the septet of owner nations with at least one title.

This Saturday the headlines of the largest of the Antilles were Magdiel Estrada (73 kg) and Orlando Polanco (66 kg), who defeated Peruvian Juan Postigo and Brazilian Michael Marcelino, respectively, in the finals.

The other two Cubans in action on Saturday were Zamarit Gregorio (48 kg) and Danny Porte (60 kg), who were on the way to the podium, with a fifth -disputed bronze- and a seventh -lost in the bronze discussion-, in that order.

Cuba participated with only seven judokas with the purpose of completing their teams (myf) for the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago de Chile, since points are distributed in Lima for the Chilean multi-sport event and the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The organizers announced the participation of 118 judokas -66 men and 52 women- from 24 countries.
