Coach Thomas Tuchel Reflects on Positive Pre-Season as Bayern Munich Prepares for Asia Trip

Coach Thomas Tuchel from Bayern Munich drew a satisfied conclusion after the first part of the pre-season. “It was a good training camp,” he said after the last session at Tegernsee. “The positive things were the spirit and the will to work, there was a good spirit. We are tactically and in our game principles further. The first step has been taken.”

The next major one is on the Asia trip from Monday (until August 3rd). According to Tuchel, it is unclear whether the injured Thomas Müller (hip) and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (knee) will be able to fly to Japan and Singapore.

On the trip with test matches against Manchester City, Kawasaki Frontale and Liverpool FC, the coach wants to “take little account of the weather and the time change so that we can get enough kilometers on our feet,” as he announced.

City, emphasized Tuchel, is “the standard” for him in terms of style of play. When asked about Uli Hoeneß’s statement that you can no longer act as loving the ball as Pep Guardiola once celebrated, he said: “City played the Champions League final with five central defenders, the trend is clear – Pep plays the most intense Football currently in Europe.”

Reducing City team manager Guardiola to passes or technical play “doesn’t do him justice,” emphasized Tuchel. “But I know what Uli means – and he’s not entirely wrong. If you see our willingness (in training), we have to get to the root of why we can’t bring that into play.” At the end of last season, “there was a lack of toxicity, that’s undisputed, we’re trying to stop that”.
