Bijan Robinson: The Favorite for Offensive Rookie of the Year

In this new miniseries here at ProFootball, we are going to list our bets for the individual prizes. Remembering that we are still in the pre-season, where weeds are weeded with a plastic knife and all the predictions made now may not even happen.

At the time of the Draft, the most hyped prospect on the offense, with the exception of quarterbacks, was Bijan Robinson. With far above average talent and being compared to Saquon Barkley in droves, the then-Texas running back revived discussions about top-10 running backs. That’s exactly what happened: Bijan was the eighth overall pick and first pick for the Atlanta Falcons. That page turned, now the focus is on seeing how Robinson will fit into Arthur Smith’s young attack. The expectation? He is the current bookmaker favorite to take the Offensive Rookie of the Year award.

Complete package

He hasn’t been compared to Barkley for nothing: one of the biggest similarities between the two is that they are both the complete package at the position. Bijan Robinson is the type of player who immediately stands out: strong, fast, explosive and, above all, capable of improvising plays. He didn’t have a great offensive line on the Longhorns, but he always managed to pull rabbits out of the hat, even if he was behind the line of scrimmage most of the time.

Another point that counts in its favor is its versatility. The running back can adapt to any system, whether against defenses with more zone or angular blocks. In addition, he has already shown that he can contribute in the air when he is lined up as a receiver: in College, Robinson showed good flashes of what he can produce after a reception.

Perhaps your only downsides are some bad decision making, like trying to cut when you can just go the route forward, or even facing unnecessary contacts. Something that can get in the way of Robinson is also his urge to “want to do more”: in some situations, he always looks for an extra route to stretch the move, when the best thing would be to end up there. This is not a negative point at all, but in the face of defenses in the NFL, much faster and smarter than those in College, the spell can turn against the sorcerer. Even so, he is an above average player and has everything to become a star in the league.
