Antonio Sainzfather of Carlos Sainz and grandfather of Carlos Sainz Jr. He passed away this Wednesday at the age of 97.. The father of the two-time world rally champion and triple winner of the Dakar and grandfather of the Ferrari driver in Formula 1, was not a fan of the motor world, but he did contribute to making his son one.
When he was more or less 11 years old, Antonio Sainz gave his son miniature cars with which he began a collection. This led him to become interested in the makes and models of that time.
In 1980, Carlos Sainz, just turned 18, set himself the goal of participating in his first rally race together with Juanjo Lacalle with the Renault 5 that his father had bought him to go to university.
