Ajax fans angry after André Onana looks back on a period at ‘small club’

André Onana has caused bad blood in Amsterdam during his first interview with the club channel of his new employer Manchester United. In the interview, the Cameroonian looked back on the performance of the 2018-19 season, in which he surprisingly advanced to the semi-finals of the Champions League with Ajax.

“That was not an easy achievement with a small club like Ajax. That only happens once every 20, 25 years,” said Onana. The goalkeeper from Cameroon is very proud of his arrival at United. “It’s not like everyone gets the chance to play for a club like United. As far as I’m concerned, if you play for United, you’re playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world.”

Onana expects that he will adapt quickly at United and that the playing style of coach Erik ten Hag’s team will adapt well to him. “I have already trained once. The quality here is enormous”, continues the goalkeeper. Onana describes herself as a football goalkeeper.

“I’m very comfortable playing football,” he explains. “However, you have to choose the right moment: the most important thing is to recognize the right moment. I expect that we will often have the ball. Sometimes I have to play higher up the field and sometimes lower. I consider myself a modern goalkeeper. I can adapt well to any situation.”
