16-Year-Old Russian Sensation Advances to Round of 16 in Wimbledon

The only 16-year-old Russian Mirra Andrejewa hat in Wimbledon sensationally reached the round of 16. The qualifier beat her compatriot, who was number 22, in the grass classic on Sunday Anastasia Potapowa with 6: 2, 7: 5 and is thus at her premiere in London straight away in the round of 16. There she meets the American on Monday Madison Keys.

“It feels incredible,” said Andreyeva. She played her first Grand Slam tournament a few weeks ago at the French Open in Paris, where she had reached the third round.

Out of breath

She played a strong first set against Potapova. In the second round, however, Andreyeva had some problems and was quickly trailing 1:4. But she found her way back into the game with great fighting spirit and even fended off two set balls when the score was 4:5.

After 1:35 hours, number 102 in the world used her first match point and then had to collect herself. “I couldn’t show any emotion on the pitch. I was out of breath after every rally,” said Andreyeva.

The game between Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrow and number 10 seeded Frances Tiafoe, which was canceled the day before, was also only a third-round game. The American also had no chance in the sequel, Dimitrov swept the ex-Vienna finalist off the “sacred” lawn with 6: 2.6: 3.6: 2. The 32-year-old Dimitrov will now have to deal with the number 6 seeded Dane Holger Rune, who is twelve years younger, in a generational duel in the round of 16. “He’s a young, talented and very dangerous player. But so am I, minus the young one,” Dimitrov joked on the pitch.
