Russian and Belarusian tennis pros will be allowed to play at Wimbledon again this year – sparking debate.

After a year’s hiatus, Wimbledon is back with players from Russia and Belarus. But only because there was a lot of pressure on the British tennis association LTA.
The organizers would have kept their course from the previous year, but there was a risk of “considerable penalties” from the powerful player associations ATP and WTA. There is talk of a “real prospect of termination of our membership” and fines of up to $1 million.
Participation subject to conditions
Tennis is one of the few individual sports in which the (Bela)Russian players are allowed to compete without restrictions, simply under a neutral flag. Except for Wimbledon last year. Therefore there were no ATP and WTA points to be won.
The LTA attached conditions to this year’s participation:
The athletes must sign a declaration of neutrality. They must not express support for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. They may not receive any financial support from the state in connection with their participation.
