Verstappen gets rid of a sanction

According to a statement issued by the FIA, the Dutch driver would have hindered the Dane in turn 1 during the first round of qualifying. Footage shows Max driving slowly off the first lap as Magnussen started his fastest lap and lost time as he had to maneuver around the Red Bull. In any case, due to the lap of the Dane, she was eliminated for exceeding the limits of the track.

Verstappen risked a five position penalty on the grid, which would have left pole position in the hands of Charles Leclerc, who finished qualifying in second position and won a year ago with his Ferrari at the home of Red Bull. But it has not been that way.

The FIA note reads as follows:

“The stewards listened to the driver of car 1 (Max Verstappen), to the driver of car 20 (Kevin Magnussen), to team representatives and reviewed data from the positioning system, video, timing, telemetry, team radio and video evidence.”

“The driver of car 1 stated that he saw a car approaching after crossing the finish line at the end of his lap and moved to the left after the exit of turn 1. The driver of car 20 stated that he had to move to the left right to avoid car 1 and therefore lost time on his fast lap“.

“The commissioners determined, from the video evidencethat the 20 car had touched the curb at Turn 1 and that this had caused a slight change in acceleration, which in turn had led to a slightly slower time in the following mini sectors.”

“The stewards further determined that car 20 did not have to take any significant action. We further noted that the fact that car 20’s lap time was subsequently erased (due to exceed track limits in turn 10) was irrelevant to that decision. Any incident is always investigated regardless of other incidents or penalties.”
