“This tournament is basketball in its purest form”

In charge of the Global X U12 La Roda is Diego Berruga as technical director. The coordinator of the Basketball Schools of CP La Roda participated in the foundation of the tournament and in these 25 editions in which it has grown to become the most important minibasketball tournament held in Europe.

How can a tournament of this level be maintained for so many years?
With great enthusiasm above all. You have to think that we have something that they like, that it is beautiful. We see it in the kids of our club, those who have had the opportunity to play, who over the years do not lose their enthusiasm for being there collaborating. It’s what I think keeps the flame going.

You start with a few close teams and now it’s an international tournament.
It all starts with a trip we made with the Castilla-La Mancha team to the Spanish Championship. We saw how it was played in other communities and we realized that it was very different from how ours played. We thought that we should take all the coaches from La Roda to see how they play in other places and, since that was impossible, the best thing was to set up a tournament in La Roda so that those teams would come here and thus enrich our coaches. The first year was a one-day tournament, with teams from the province plus some from Murcia, Madrid and Valencia. That was a success. In two or three years we passed it to two days of competition but its definitive accolade was in the fourth edition, when Real Madrid came, and since then it has not failed. Now you can no longer grow in number, but you can grow in quality and origin of the teams. This year we have from disparate countries like Puerto Rico or Switzerland. We are very proud of the tournament and even more so since a few years ago we also started with the women’s tournament, with which we are working so that it is also international.

The men’s tournament is already a reference in Europe.
There are teams that have been here for many years, such as Bayern Munich or the Lithuanian national team. They are teams that spend the year playing this type of tournament and tell us that ours is the best in Europe, both for the level of the participants and for the organization and that makes us feel very proud. This year with the boys we have taken a new step forward with the duration, going from three to four days of the tournament, from Thursday to Sunday, but on Monday the teams begin to arrive at La Roda and have their training sessions, their friendlies. It continues to be a very enriching week of coexistence for everyone. We hope that, whether they finish first or last, they leave happy and with the feeling that they have been playing a very important championship.
