The “Maitena” repeats its victory in the Surne-Eskarra Trophy Regatta, one of the historic events in the Abra

The Real Club Marítimo del Abra-Real Sporting Club celebrates its 125th anniversary this year. And among so many years of history, there are regattas with a lot of tradition, such as the Eskarra Trophy that was born back in 1964. There are already 58 editions, only interrupted by the pandemic in 2020, in which the crews have sailed in search of registering their name on the beautiful cup raised by the sailors of the winning boat. Like last year, in the XVIII SURNE Regatta-58º Eskarra Trophy, Mikel Emaldi’s Maitena won. In the rest of the classes, José Miguel Franco’s Bacilón won in Crucero I, Juan Carlos Estefanía’s Kohen in Crucero II and Ignacio Camino and Armando Gutiérrez’s Solintal in J80 class. The test was carried out on a very hot day in the Bay of Biscay and very little wind from the northwest -between six and eight knots-, with 50 degree rolls that made the execution of the tests very complicated.

From the early hours of Saturday there was a great atmosphere on the gangplank and pontoons of the Las Arenas club, with the crews preparing for one of the most important and cutting-edge events on the calendar for cruiser class boats and J80 class one-design boats, the latter who also scored points for the Euskadi Championship that ends this Sunday.

The historic competition, one of the most special since that beautiful initiative of the former president of the Real Club Marítimo del Abra-Real Sporting Club, Don Ramón Zubiria, as a tribute to José Luis Azqueta and his sailboat ‘Eskarra’, saw Solintal del Real Club Marítimo de Santander, led by Ignacio Camino and Armando Gutiérrez, as the best on this day and winner of this SURNE Regatta-58º Eskarra Trophy in the J80 class, in addition to being the favorite to prevail in the Euskadi Championship with one day to go . The Cantabrian Solintal signed up for the two rounds completed, the first 3.4 miles ahead of José Azqueta’s Biobizz from Biscay and Olatz Muñoz’s Decoexsa from Gipuzkoa, who had a nice fight; and the second shortest of 2.4 miles (two upwind and two sterns) with José María Torcida’s Fredo La Estrella del Norte in second place and Biobizz in third. José Azqueta’s crew is precisely second overall, three points behind Solintal, with Fredo La Estrella del Norte third, four points behind the leader. The second and final day looks very exciting.

For its part, the victory in the Regatta class in this 58th Eskarra Trophy fell to Mikel Emaldi’s Maitena, who won the 10-mile race in the Abra exterior and repeated his victory from the previous year. The podium was completed by Mauricio Guibert’s Akelarre and Javier Chávarri’s Rat Pack. Then, Alfonso Churruca’s Alpega, Javier Onaindia’s Symphony, Carlos Maidagan’s Despeinada, José Luis Ribed’s Tchin Tchin and Jon Garai’s Thelonious were classified. Already in Crucero I the Bacilón of José Miguel Franco was awarded the victory, with the Kribi of Juanma Pereiro second and with the Nexus of Javier Trueba in third place. In Crucero II he won the Kohen, a First 35S5, owned by Juan Carlos Estefanía. Second was Jairo López de Guevara’s Ramper.
