Co-favorite Rybakina gives up due to illness
Bad luck for Yelena Rybakina: Kazakhstan, number 4, cannot play her third round match against Spaniard Sara Sorribes Tormo (WTA 132) at the French Open due to illness.
Elena Rybakina on withdrawal from Roland Garros:
“I had a fever, headache, I think you can hear it also…”
She sounds really ill. Her voice is raspy & it sounds like she’s been coughing all night. I’m surprised she even went to the press conference ❤️????

She has a fever and a headache and has not slept well in the last two nights, the Wimbledon champion explained in a press conference. Winner of last month’s WTA 1000 tournament in Rome and a finalist at the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam tournament of the year, 23-year-old Rybakina was one of the favorites at Roland Garros.
Ruud stays on course
Last year’s finalist Casper Ruud followed the top favorites Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic into the round of 16. The world number 4 from Norway won his third round game after initial difficulties against the Chinese Zhang Zhizhen 4: 6, 6: 4, 6: 1, 6: 4.
Ruud is the best-ranked player in the lower half of the table in Paris after the departure of Daniil Medvedev. In the next round, Ruud could meet his successor in the Geneva Open list of winners in Chile’s Nicolas Jarry (ATP 35), who defeated him in the quarter-finals in Geneva last week.
Swiatek with maximum penalty for opponent
Iga Swiatek was in a hurry on the Philippe Chatrier court on Saturday. The world number one from Poland ran over the Chinese Wang Xinyu (WTA 80) 6: 0, 6: 0. The game only lasted 51 minutes. Swiatek, who has already won the French Open twice (2020 and 2022), has only lost eight games in three games in Paris so far.
Gauff wins the teenage duel
Last year’s finalist Coco Gauff ended the run of Grand Slam debutant Mirra Andreyeva (WTA 143) in the 3rd round. The only 16-year-old Russian, who had played through the qualification, won the first set in the tie-break, but then had no chance against the number 6 seeded American with twice 1: 6. (abu/sda)
Coco Gauff on beating Mirra Andreeva:
“Mirra is super young & there’s a big future for her. I remember I was here playing at 16 years old. She has a lot to look forward to. You guys will hopefully see many more matches between the two of us.”
