The boxer Laura Fuertes after her last great success: “I am very happy to make history for Spanish boxing”

The Asturian Laura Fuertes continues to make history in national boxing. Yesterday she became the first Spanish boxer to qualify for the Olympic Games. She did it after beating the Portuguese Rita de Pinho Soares with authority in the quarterfinals of the -50 kilos category of the European Games that are being held in Krakow (Poland).

Laura prevailed over her rival by unanimous decision of the five judges, which, in addition to allowing her to fight for the medals, means fulfilling her dream of qualifying for Paris 2024, the goal she had set herself for a long time. The woman from Gijón started hesitantly and the first round was the most even, but little by little she was imposing her greatest strength and clearly tipping the fight in her favor despite the Portuguese woman’s attempt in the last round to win.

“I already have the dream ticket and I am very happy to make history for Spanish boxing both before in a World Cup and now representing my country in a Games. Only the work team knows what we have fought for this,” said Fuertes in statements disseminated by the Spanish Boxing Federation.

Laura also had a message for all women “follow your dreams because in the end they come true,” she said in a message posted on her social networks by the Spanish Olympic Committee. This success is not the first that the woman from Gijón has achieved since it must be remembered that she was also the first Spanish boxer to achieve a medal in a World Championship, specifically last year.

The Asturian’s rival in the semifinals tomorrow Friday will be the Frenchwoman Wassila Lkhadiri, who, like her, was a bronze medalist in the last World Cups held in New Delhi in March this year. An edition in which Laura Fuertes fell in the quarterfinals. This setback did not discourage the Asturian who continued to work towards qualifying for the Olympic Games, which she achieved at the first opportunity given to her, such as the European Games, which will allow her to better plan her preparation for Paris without having to risk their classification in another competition.

Laura Fuertes’s career is linked to the Asturbox club and coach Oliver Sánchez, although in recent years she trained in Madrid with the rest of the Spanish team.

Her neighbors from the Gijón parish of Monteana organized a great reception for her when she won the World Cup medal, so they will surely prepare another great party when Laura returns home.

Before that, he still has to fight for the medals in the European Games and with morale through the roof he will want to improve on the third drawer of the podium achieved in the 2022 World Championship.
