Shortly before the grass classic in Wimbledon, tennis pro Yannick Hanfmann (Karlsruhe) gained a lot of self-confidence with a spectacular victory. The 31-year-old surprisingly defeated the top seeded Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas 6: 4, 3: 6, 6: 2 in the round of 16 at the ATP tournament in Mallorca.
Hanfmann is now up against the Spaniard Feliciano Lopez in the quarterfinals.
Hanfmann surprised Tsitsipas with an early break and then consistently played his game against the number 5 in the world.
After 1:45 hours he then made what is possibly his greatest career win against the tournament champion. Hanfmann is the only German participant in the lawn tournament on the Balearic Island and is already in the main draw at Wimbledon.
“To beat a top ten player, a lot of things have to work, I had a really good start,” said Hanfmann, who only gave up his serve once in the entire match: “Maybe Stefanos was a bit rusty with the conditions. Overall, I’m I’m very happy with my performance.”
