the astonishing choice of the organizers to ban alcohol in the enclosures for the general public

Japanese fans will not be able to drink beers in the 2024 Olympics stadiums, unless they are JB Autissier / Panoramic / JB Autissier VIPs

MOOD – According to Le Parisien, only VIPs will be able to consume alcohol at Olympic competition sites.

Alcohol, a privilege of the rich, or of the wealthy? According The Parisian, it will indeed be necessary to be a VIP to have the right to consume beers, wines or even supreme luxury champagne on the competition sites of the next Olympic Games 2024 in Paris. For the simple fellows, it will be necessary to be satisfied with water or other soft drinks partners of the organization. A decision assumed by the Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games (Cojo) which takes refuge behind the respect of the Evin Law which came into force in November 1992 to justify such a choice. Which was not, however, mandatory…

Indeed, derogations, framed by law, exist. As is the case for several rugby clubs for example, even though the next World Cup organized in France from September 8 to October 28 has every intention of being able to offer its spectators the possibility of consuming pints of hops. An exception that the organizers of Paris 2024 did not want to make their own, thus following the example of Tokyo three years ago. Except that the previous Games had taken place in a very different health context, in the almost total absence of the public, which made it much simpler to ban the very few spectators admitted to certain competition sites. But in London as in Rio, the beer had been able to flow freely.

The 2024 Olympics, a competition not for all budgets

The decision of the Cojo is obviously reminiscent of that, which had caused controversy, of the organizers of the last Football World Cup in Qatar at the end of 2022. A political choice then in a country of Muslim faith, where alcohol is prohibited except in certain hotels, bars or restaurants with a special license. The controversy should be much less concerning the 2024 Olympics. Even if this difference in treatment between VIPs and “simple” spectators could make people talk. Especially since it is in line with the criticisms concerning the price of tickets deemed too expensive, or with the passage of the flame billed at 180,000 euros, which excluded certain departments and emblematic cities not wishing to pay such a sum.

By virtue of his status as Head of State, Emmanuel Macron, he will therefore be able to afford once again to down a dead beer if he wishes, to celebrate this or that Olympic title. It remains to be seen whether this absence of alcoholic liquids will make the Olympic party even crazier, or whether it risks lacking in flavor…
