Eight weeks ago, Simon Terodde announced that he was leaving Schalke 04. Since then, many fans have mourned the striker. But now the turning point: The 35-year-old remains in the second division after being relegated.
SImon Terodde has now extended his contract with Schalke 04, who have been relegated to the Bundesliga, for another year. This was reported by the “Bild” newspaper on Friday. Accordingly, the club was able to agree with the striker on another year in Gelsenkirchen. Actually, Terodde’s contract expires on June 30th. On Friday morning, the Revier club confirmed the whereabouts of the attacker with a video on Twitter. “Thank you for staying,” says the short clip, which sounds like a farewell thank you, but at the end of which Terodde celebrates his typical goal celebration gesture.
With 172 goals in 283 games, Terodde is the record scorer in the 2nd Bundesliga, four times (2016, 2017, 2019 and 2022) he was top scorer. Two years ago he moved to Gelsenkirchen, having previously led VfB Stuttgart (2017) and 1. FC Köln (2019) to the second division championship. In his first season, the center forward helped his team get promoted back to the Bundesliga with 30 goals in 30 games. There, however, Terodde temporarily lost his regular place and scored only five goals.
On April 5, the 35-year-old announced that he would not renew his expiring contract and would leave Schalke 04 at the end of the season. “In the past few weeks, there has been a lot of media speculation about my future. This is a topic that neither the club nor I need in these trend-setting weeks. That’s why I’d like to explain now that my time at Schalke will definitely end in the summer.” He emphasized at the time that he wanted to say goodbye by staying up.
As is well known, Schalke narrowly missed remaining in the Bundesliga and now the club hero is staying. Recently rumors circulated that the dangerous attacker had been traded as an addition to the third division club Rot-Weiss Essen. Head coach Thomas Reis’ Schalke team will start their training session at the Parkstadion on Monday, June 26th. During the week, the coach had given the direct return to the Bundesliga as a goal for the season. Goals from Simon Terodde should help once again.
