Shohei Ohtani Throws Gem, but Los Angeles Angels Fall Short in Loss to Dodgers

Shohei Ohtani hit 12 times through seven one-run innings but was handed a loss by the Los Angeles Angels, who lost 2-0 to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday.

The Angels had just two hits, both by Luis Rengifo, and Ohtani (6-3) was beaten by a series of Dodgers relievers after captain Dave Roberts went for a game opener.

Ohtani ruled out six of the first ten Dodgers he faced before giving up his lone run on a Freddie Freeman homer early in the fourth inning at Angel Stadium.

Angels manager Phil Nevin said, “(Going through the top of their lineup like Sho did) is very impressive.”

The two-way star allowed five hits and two walks during his 101-pitch outing.

“I had a good rhythm in the bullpen and I was able to maintain it in the game. I felt comfortable and threw more fastballs than usual,” Ohtani said.

“The key is to continue to feel like today. Of course it’s tough and there are days in between, but I have to stay focused (in training) and do what I did again. »

The Angels were robbed of the first run late in the third inning when Rengifo was taken out at home plate as he attempted to score on a Mickey Moniak out to the left.

Miguel Vargas helped the Dodgers seal the 2-0 series sweep by adding an insurance run with a solo strike in the top of the ninth.

Ohtani finished 0-for-3 at the plate, going without a hit a day after his hitting streak was cut short at 15 games.
