Rudy Gobert Commits to Participating in 2023 World Cup Despite Uncertainty

Good news after bad. A few hours after the announcement of the renunciation of Victor Wembanyama to best prepare for his first NBA season, Rudy Gobert chose to be part of the adventure. In a post on Instagram, the one who was voted best defender in the NBA three times announced his participation in this 2023 World Cup in Indonesia, the Philippines and Japan (August 25-September 10).

However, a certain uncertainty had been hovering for several weeks. After a frustrating first season with the Minnesota Timberwolves ended in the first round of the playoffs, Rudy Gobert had expressed doubts about his presence with the Blues this summer. “I know that this summer I will put myself in a position in which I have never really put myself before”, explained the pivot a few days after the end of his season, announcing to be “undecided” for the World Cup. The former Choletais has therefore reviewed his plans and will still be there to be a part of the Blues.

Always present to wear the colors of France since 2014 (except at Euro 2017), Gobert heard the message of Vincent Collet, who had recalled the challenge of this World Cup a few weeks ago. “He is a leader and he knows that this World Cup is not only worth as a competition, but also to be a launching pad for the Games. He also needs the France team to be able to make the best possible season next year. He has time to take care of himself, to rest and to be with us on July 28. In terms of leadership, his presence is not insignificant”, had warned the coach des Bleus, who therefore did not experience a totally black Monday after Wemby’s refusal.
