The bicycle exceeded 17 million units in 2021 favorable for the European industry

The European bicycle industry continued its growth curve with an increase in turnover and investments, record levels of electric bicycle sales and production, but also with a drop in sales of conventional bicycles in 2022, according to the European Report of the Bicycle Sector published by CONEBI.

More production and more electric bikes

After years of notable market growth, in 2022 there was a considerable slowdown in bicycle sales at the European level: from 17.1 million units sold in 2021 to 14.7 million units in 2022.

However, the demand for electric bicycles continued to increase, which exceeded 5.5 million units sold in 2022. Total sales of bicycles and electric bicycles reached a value of 21.2 billion euros (7.4% more than in 2021 )

Regarding the production figures for bicycles and electric bicycles, in 2022 15.2 million bicycles were manufactured in Europe, of which 5.4 million were electric bicycles. Regarding the production of bicycle parts and accessories, a substantial increase was registered in 2022 reaching a value of more than 4.8 billion euros (compared to 3.6 billion euros in 2021)

More investment and employment

In 2022, industry investments reached €2 billion (+14% compared to €1.75 billion of investments in 2021). Direct jobs in the manufacturing industry saw a steady increase of 3% from 2021 to over 89,000 in 2022, bringing the total direct/indirect jobs in Europe to around 180,000, and growth of 5% in the number of companies.

“In 2022, the European bicycle industry has shown remarkable resilience, despite the significant slowdown in conventional bicycle sales and the well-known supply chain disruptions that still persist as a result of the pandemic. We are encouraged by the increased industry emphasis on sustainability and the growing trend of European production. The future of our industry remains bright” said Erhard Buchel, President of CONEBI.

Data from the bicycle sector in Spain

In line with European data, after two record years in which more than 1.5 million bicycles were sold annually, the value of bicycle sales in Spain in 2022 fell by 6% compared to 2021 and the sale of bicycles (units), decreased by 13.59%.

However, in 2022 the increase in the sale of urban (+22.5%) and electric (+5.7%) bicycles stood out compared to 2021 and the national production of bicycles remained at record levels, doubling the value in 2022. of production compared to 2019. If we compare the turnover of the sector with the figures prior to the pandemic, it was 45.1% above the data for 2019.

In line with the data published by CONEBI on employment and business creation at a European level, the bicycle sector in Spain produced positive data in 2022, exceeding 24,400 directly employed people for the first time (+5.32%) , register a growth in the number of companies of 10.77% to 401 and the number of points of sale, rental and repair of bicycles to 3,111 (+2.74%)

“The year 2022 has not been easy for the bicycle industry, but the increase in employment, the creation of companies and the positive behavior of the sale of electric and urban bicycles reflects what the sector can offer to Spanish society: cleaner mobility, jobs and business opportunities” commented Javier López, president of AMBE, during the presentation of the data for the sector in Spain.
